Fog Cause Spillway Crash, Killing 7

The deadly pileup on Monday morning just west of New Orleans killed at least 7 people, state police say.

The crash occurred on I-55 in St. John the Baptist Parish and involved at least 158 cars.

More than 25 victims were taken to hospitals with all ranges of injuries, with many people heading to medical facilities on their own, police said.

Only one vehicle fell off the interstate into the water, but luckily the driver was able to make it out of the car.

"A portion of the crash scene caught on fire shortly after the initial incident. One tanker truck carrying a hazardous liquid is being off-loaded due to a compromised tank/trailer," Lt. Melissa Matey of the Louisiana State Police said in a statement.

Matey said there is a possibility of finding more fatalities once the tanker is removed and they access the vehicles near it.

Videos from the scene posted on social media showed dense fog and dozens of damaged vehicles.

This so-called "super fog," was a mixture of wildfire smoke and fog with visibility only as high as 10 feet, WWL-TV reported.

Over 62% of Louisiana is currently experiencing an “Exceptional Drought,” contributing to the active fire burning underground in forested wetlands between Bayou Sauvage National Urban Wildlife Refuge and the Michoud Canal.
