Nonprofits, Community Leaders Gather at State Capitol to Raise Awareness of Fentanyl Overdoses

Fentanyl, a highly potent synthetic opioid, is a growing concern for many Americans, especially parents. Over 5,000 people have lost their lives to drug overdoses involving fentanyl, and the number is rising. To address this issue, nonprofit organizations, community leaders, and families recently gathered at the Louisiana State Capitol to raise awareness of youth drug overdoses, specifically fentanyl.

Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry and Elbert Guillory, a former member of the Louisiana State Senate, called for more action to stop the flow of drugs into the country. Lilly Harvey, the founder of Millie Mattered Overdose & Addiction Advocacy, shared the story of her daughter, Lillie Camille Harvey, who died of a fentanyl overdose at 28 years old. Harvey now advocates for awareness and harm reduction efforts to prevent similar tragedies.

According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, just one kilogram of fentanyl can kill up to 500,000 people. This sobering fact underscores the urgency of the situation. If you or someone you know is struggling with drug addiction, help is available. Call or text 988 or visit 988lifeline.org for assistance.
