Shell has given the green light to a significant expansion project at its Port Allen catalyst manufacturing plant in Louisiana. The company will invest $121.7 million in the expansion, aimed at bolstering production capacity. This expansion endeavor is expected to create 17 new jobs, with an average annual salary exceeding $94,000. Louisiana Economic Development (LED) made the announcement on Monday, emphasizing the positive economic impact of the project.
The expansion of the Port Allen catalyst plant will not only bring direct employment opportunities but also create 57 indirect jobs in the region. Currently, the facility, operated by Shell's Catalysts and Technologies division, employs 86 individuals. LED revealed that the new jobs will be accompanied by competitive salaries, contributing to the local economy.
The primary objective of the project is to increase the output of "high-performance" catalysts at the Port Allen plant, which is already the largest refining catalyst plant globally. The expansion will enable the facility to produce an additional 15,000 tons of catalysts per year. While the current output of the plant has not been disclosed by Shell officials, this expansion will undoubtedly contribute to its already substantial production capacity.
Preliminary construction work has already commenced earlier this year, as reported by LED. The final investment decision was jointly announced by Shell and the state, signaling their commitment to the expansion project. Equipment installation is scheduled to commence in September 2024, and the final testing of the products is anticipated to conclude by the end of that year.
Elise H. Nowee, Vice President of Shell Catalysts and Technologies, expressed the company's long-standing presence in Port Allen, with over 13 years of successful operation. Nowee stated that the investment in the expansion project reaffirms Shell's dedication to Louisiana as a prime business location.
Catalysts play a crucial role in enhancing chemical reactions during the manufacturing process. They are utilized in various industries to produce a wide range of items, including biofuels, sustainable aviation fuel, medical equipment, and even shoes. LED's news release highlighted that the "high-performance" catalysts produced as a result of the Port Allen expansion will be more energy-efficient compared to standard catalysts when used in chemical reactions. This development aligns with the industry's ongoing efforts towards sustainable and eco-friendly practices.
As part of its commitment to the expansion project, Shell is expected to participate in Louisiana's Quality Jobs and Industrial Tax Exemption incentive programs. These programs aim to provide additional support and incentives for businesses that contribute to job creation and economic growth in the state.
